If you are looking for a water purifier for your home, then chances are, you would have come across the term SCMT. Don’t worry, we will explain this filtration technology in detail in this post so that you can make an informed buying decision.
About AO Smith
AO Smith is the largest manufacturer and marketer of water heaters in North America. It is also a reputed brand in water purifier segment. It is more than 100 years old organization with offices in several different parts of the world and a revenue of more than $3 Billion. AO Smith India was setup in the year 2006 and has manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru. Its water purifiers are manufactured in Harohalli, Bengaluru.
What is SCMT & How it Works?
SCMT stands for Silver Charged Membrane Technology, which is an additional layer of filtration that is added to RO water purifiers.
The term SCMT is a brand name used by AO Smith in its water purifiers and this is a unique technology not used by other water purifier brands.
SCMT is a single unit that replaces several different types of filtration technologies such as UF, MF and UV. As per AO Smith, this is filtration system is better than all of these technologies combined.
Many AO Smith water purifiers come with SAPC or Silver Activated Post Carbon Filter. The silver-based carbon filter reduces the microbial growth and ‘polishes’ the water. Once this process is complete, the water passes through SCMT in its final stage.
SCMT is a water purification process that uses a permeable membrane to remove bacteria, viruses endotoxins, colloids and chemicals and harmful particles from drinking water. SCMT is also good for health because it removes harmful microbes present in the water without affecting the taste.
It is somewhat similar to other membrane based filters such as UF and MF. However, the SCMT has silver particles present in it. As water passes through SCMT, the contaminants are eliminated due to antimicrobial nature of silver.
SCMT vs UV
UV purification works by passing UV-C radiation through water. This process denatures DNA of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and cysts. This makes them ineffective. Hence, UV purification is considered one of the best methods to disinfect water. However, UV purification cannot remove physical impurities such as particulates, colloids, metals etc.
SCMT, on the other hand, can not only remove viruses, bacteria and cysts, but also physical impurities from water. However, just like UV filter, even SCMT unit is placed at the end of filtration process so that any remaining contaminant after RO purification can be eliminated from water.
As you can see, SCMT is better than UF and MF filtration technologies that cannot remove phosphates and certain chemicals. UF can remove certain viruses, but many viruses can pass through UF.
Filtration Process in AO Smith Water Purifiers
Many AO Smith RO water purifiers come with 8 stages of purification. Let us understand what are these steps of filtration.
Step 1 – Pre-Filter
In the first stage of purification, prefilter removes larger physical impurities. This is similar to prefilters used in other water purifiers.
Step 2 – Sediment Filter
After this, the water is passed through sediment filter that removes impurities not removed by pre-filter. This process makes water ready to be used to further slightly more advanced filtration techniques.
Step 3 – Pre Carbon Filter
Pre carbon filter absorbs chlorine and its byproducts and organic compounds. Since organic compounds cause bad taste and smell, this methods removes odour and bad taste from water. Also, municipality water sometimes have excess chlorine, which can cause bad taste. This filter removes that too.
Step 4 – Advanced Recovery Technology
Water from pre carbon filter directly enters the ART chamber. The Advanced Recovery Technology ensures 2 times water recovery compared to ordinary RO water purifier by preventing scale formation on the RO membrane. Hence, it is good for the environment. This is an important step because one of the biggest disadvantages of RO water purifier is that is a regular RO can waste as much as 60 – 80% of water. Hence, this step helps in preventing this wastage.
Step 5 – RO Filtration
RO filtration is the most effective method to remove impurities from water. The RO membrane is 0.00001 microns thick, which not only removes bacteria, viruses, but also harmful heavy metals such as Zinc, Cadmium, Arsenic, Lead, Nitrates, sulphates and pesticides, which cannot be removed by regular membranes such as UF/MF.
Step 6 – Min-Tech Filter
Min-tech filter is a mineralizer. This means that it adds back essential trace elements such as magnesium and calcium. This is important because RO purification removes minerals that are necessary for a healthy body. Hence, this mineralizer replenishes the water with minerals.
Step 7 – SAPC
SAPC is a carbon filter. This means that it further removes bad taste and odour and ‘polishes’ water.
Step 8 – SCMT
In the final stage, the SCMT removes microorganisms and remaining contaminants from water.

This water purifier comes with 8 stage purification that removes almost all common impurities from water. The mineraliser technology called MIN-TECH adds back essential as they are essential trace elements. These minerals also improve the taste of water. On top of this, the mineraliser balances the pH level of water to maintain its alkalinity.
This water purifier comes with ART (Advanced Recovery Technology) that saves twice as much water as compared to regular RO water purifiers ].
AO Smith Z8 is equipped with smart alert indicators for filters and RO membrane. These indicators start glowing when the RO membrane and filters have to be replaced in advance. So that you get sufficient time to replace the filters.
Highlight of this water purifier is that it comes with separate mechanism for dispensing hot purified water. Its 0.8 litre tank is meant exclusively for storing hot water, while the 9.2 litre tank is sufficiently large for storing regular purified water.
You can dispense hot water at the click of a button. As you can see in the image, the purifier comes with two separate faucets for hot purified water and purified water at regular temperature.
