How to Purify Borewell Water
You need only two things and both are available at home easily: alum and bleaching powder.
Step 1: Add borewell water / dirty water into a bucket of around 5 litres
Step 2: Add half a teaspoon of powdered Alum in 5 litre water and stir is vigorously. (This is around 50 mg which equals 10 mg alum powder in 1 liter water)
Step 3: Wait for around 3 to 4 hours so that the sediments get coagulated and settles down at the bottom.
Step 4: Collect the top 80% using a water mug or by pouring the water from the bucket gently and leave that is leave the bottom 20% water in the bucket. Remember to be gentle and not to disturb the water too much so that you can easily take out the purified water from top of the bucket.
This water does not contain sediments and less hard now, however, it is not fit for drinking because it may contain germs. Hence the water has to be disinfected.
Step 5: To disinfect water, you have to use home bleaching powder because it contains chlorine. The prescribed dosage is around 2 drops of bleach solution for 1 liter water. Hence, you can add 10 drops into the 5 litres of water. Now stir is properly.
This water may smell little bit of chlorine. To remove this smell, you can either keep it in open air and stir it intermittently after 30 minutes or use a portable filter to purify the water to remove the smell of chlorine.
This chlorination kills around 90% percent of the bacteria in the water. If you do not want to use bleach then you can boil the water as well.

Alum powder is more effective and alum stone if you want speedy purification. Alum stone can take twice the amount of time its takes to purify water as compared to alum powder.
Best time to do this procedure is in the night so that you can wait till the morning. In the morning, if there is white semi solid layer on top, remove it and take the middle portion and leave the bottom 20% of water.
If you do not stir the water after adding the alum powder, the positive aluminum ions will not come in contact with the soil particles. Thus, the particles will not be neutralized and they will not settle down. Therefore, stirring is important for effective coagulation and flocculation.
Adding different amounts of alum can result in different cleanup results based on the turbidity of water. Adding more alum can result in a better purification, however, adding too much alum can lead to a less efficient purification.
